Call Me MISTER Program
The Call Me MISTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) Program
is a statewide and national initiative. The mission of the program is to increase
the pool of available teachers from a broader more diverse background particularly
among the State’s lowest performing elementary schools. College student participants
with high academic potential, a demonstrated commitment to teach and a servant-leadership
orientation are largely selected from among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged and
educationally at-risk communities.
As graduates, students are expected to have an impact by returning to critical need schools and communities to pursue their professional careers. To maximize opportunity and greater access, students will have the option of first attending Horry-Georgetown Technical College before transferring to a four-year institution to complete their program of study in teacher education and baccalaureate degree.
It is expected that a MISTER who completes his program of study and becomes certified to teach will assume a teaching position in a South Carolina public school and teach one year for each year they received financial support from the Call Me MISTER program.

- Financial assistance towards tuition, books and institutional fees for students enrolled in the Education Transfer or Early Care and Education programs;
- A strong academic support system to ensure a successful matriculation at HGTC; and
- A strong social support system from Call Me MISTER cohorts and past participants.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
To apply for the admittance into the Call Me MISTER program, a student must first apply for admission into HGTC and be accepted as a student.
How Do I Apply?
The deadline for applying for the Fall cohort is May 1. Students interested in participating should complete the following:
- Complete the HGTC admissions process and gain acceptance into the college.
- Submit a completed application packet to:

Application must include:
- A completed Call Me MISTER Application
- Two letters of recommendation
- One letter from an educator or administrator representing the last school attended
- One letter from a person of the student’s choice who can attest to the student’s involvement in the community and/or potential for entering the teaching profession. - An essay titled “Why I Want to Teach” which will address the student’s motivation for entering the teaching profession and the contributions he/she intends to make to the profession and the community as a teacher.
- An essay titled “Why I Should Be Accepted into the Call Me MISTER Program”
- A signed statement from a counselor or school official certifying that the student is from an under-served, under-privileged or economically disadvantaged background or area.
- A copy of the student’s most recent transcript.
- The applicant must also complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Learn more about the Financial Aid Process.
Participant Expectations
- All MISTERs must pass PRAXIS I before transferring to a four-year college/university.
- If a MISTER decides to change majors and not pursue a teaching career, it is expected that the MISTER will return or repay all financial support funding received while participating in the cohort.
