The goal of counseling is to learn about ourselves, our habits, patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaviors. Experience has shown that many of the problem-causing habits and patterns are things we have done all our life and are so automatic that we do not think about them as learned or optional behavior. The counselor believes that everyone can learn and benefit from new patterns of thinking, reverse the automatic negative thinking patterns, and begin to think, feel, and behave in new ways that are more successful and beneficial to us.
Counselors work with you to resolve concerns about your life in and outside the classroom. Your counselor can assist with a variety of issues and concerns, providing you with coping strategies to help you outside of our time together and be someone you can rely on for objective and non-judgmental therapeutic guidance.
Typically, most sessions are 50 minutes. However, being that each person is a unique individual, who has their own experiences, background, personality, etc., the counselor will tailor their therapeutic approach and session to best fit your individual needs. You and the counselor will work collaboratively to determine goals and areas for improvements based on your needs.
Student records are kept strictly confidential in compliance with state and federal laws, including FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Your counselor is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW); this means the counselor has fulfilled licensure requirements and has sworn to the state of South Carolina to uphold the confidentiality and privacy of all clients.
Yes, personal counseling services are FREE to any student who is currently enrolled in any HGTC courses on campus or online.
The counselor’s main office is located at the Conway Campus, Building 1100, Office 106A inside the Student Affairs office. The counselor will travel to all three campuses to meet with you by appointment!
