Upward Bound Program Eligibility & Application

In order to be considered to participate in the Upward Bound program, an application must be filled out in completion, signed and submitted to the Upward Bound office through email to upwardbound@hgtc.edu or mail along with copies of all required documentation.

Who is Eligible for Upward Bound?

Federal TRIO regulations require that students must have completed the 8th grade, be between the ages of 13 and 19, and require academic support in pursuing a program in post-secondary education. All students must be from low-income families and/or be potential first-generation college students. The program requires that two-thirds of the participants in a project must be both low-income and potential first-generation college students. The remaining one-third must be either low-income or potential first-generation college students.

To be eligible to apply to Upward Bound program, students must meet at least one or both, of the federal requirements:

  • Low-income household
  • Potential first-generation college student (neither parent has a four-year college degree)

In addition, all prospective applicants must meet the following:

  • Must be attending Loris High School, Green Sea Floyds High School, or Carvers Bay High School
  • Be a citizen or national of the United States, permanent resident of the United States, or in the United States for other than a temporary purpose (prospect then provides evidence of intent to become a permanent resident)
  • Receive a recommendation from their high school counselor or a teacher
  • Meet the federal criteria based on family's taxable income and/or parent(s)' educational background
  • Complete an application and interview
  • Demonstrate academic need, be interested in continuing their education after high school and be willing to participate in all aspects of the Upward Bound program
