(Horry and Georgetown counties, SC) – The Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) Foundation recently received a generous gift of $30,000 in loving memory of former HGTC nursing student, Samantha Herzig.  The beloved daughter of Sheila Barger, Samantha Herzig, was attending HGTC in the nursing program before she was tragically killed in a car accident by a drunk driver in October 2016.

“Samantha was vibrant, energetic, outgoing, and friendly with all she met,” said Sheila Barger, mother.

Samantha started contemplating the idea of becoming a nurse when her mother was hospitalized in 2008 with a blood disorder.  In 2016, when her mother was informed that her blood disorder was terminal, the news was so devastating it catapulted her calling to immediately enroll in the nursing program at HGTC.   Samantha’s friends described her as a “wrecking ball of love who drop-kicked her way into their hearts and lives.”

“Samantha was determined to work full-time to provide for her living expenses while attending college, and knowing that was important to Samantha has motivated me to provide for others like her,” continued Barger.  “It is our desire to help ensure the success of other students with little stress as possible to offset the unforeseen expenses associated with college that financial aid does not cover such as basic living needs.”

Academic Angels is considered a need-based scholarship and will be available for part-time or full-time candidates accepted into the nursing and human services degrees of study.
