HGTC Opens Fall with Multiple Delivery Methods

In-person, hybrid, and online classes to be offered at HGTC this fall.

(Conway, SC) 05/26/2020

Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) announced today that the College will be able to offer multiple delivery modes of instruction for students this fall. Courses will be taught in-person, hybrid, and online next semester to accommodate delivery preferences of students and desirable learning styles.

“As we move through the summer semester and plan for the fall, we know we will have to operate differently,” said Dr. Marilyn M. Fore, HGTC President. “This includes compliance to social distancing perhaps wearing masks, but those details are still to be determined by our Governor. We will continue to follow all orders and make changes according to the CDC and SC Department of Health and Environmental Control guidelines.”

In March, HGTC immediately adhered to the Governor’s orders and cancelled all in-person classes when he announced that colleges and universities would be required to deliver courses online for the remainder of the spring semester. For those courses needing the hands-on component such as labs and clinicals, qualifying students were able to finish the semester in small groups.

The traditional or in-person delivery method allows learners and faculty to meet in person or as a group for regularly scheduled class sessions either on campus or at another physical location. The hybrid/blended delivery format is an instructional delivery method which combines the face-to-face delivery and the distance delivery formats. Online instruction is provided via the Internet and no face-to-face instruction is required. This format is a virtual classroom where course instruction, course content, and external resources such as academic links are provided to learners who are physically separated from the instructor.

On Monday, June 1, HGTC will begin its phased re-entry process for employees. On Monday, June 8, HGTC will begin a phased re-entry approach for all students and visitors. Student services areas on the three campuses including Admissions, Financial Aid, the Registrar’s Office, and Student Accounts will be open and provide services to students at the front counters in Building 1100 on the Conway Campus, Building 200 on the Grand Strand Campus, and Building 100 on the Georgetown Campus. Other offices will be open on a limited basis at this time, however, virtual services will continue.

Following the guidelines issued by the State of South Carolina’s Department of Administration, other student services areas including, but not limited to, the Testing Center, Counseling, and Disability Services will expand the level of face-to-face services at the end of June in later phases of the College’s re-entry plans. Additional details about these services and departments will be provided as the College implements additional stages of the re-entry process. Again, virtual services will continue to be available.
