Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) announces that the South Carolina House of Representatives has adopted House Resolution No. 5085 declaring March 30 through April 2, 2026, as “AI Week” in the State of South Carolina, recognizing the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, workforce development, and economic innovation.
House Resolution No. 5085, introduced by Rep. Tim McGinnis and numerous co-sponsors, acknowledges that artificial intelligence is transforming the modern workplace by increasing efficiency, reducing routine tasks, and accelerating data-driven decision-making. The resolution further recognizes AI as a powerful tool that augments human capabilities by supporting automation, content creation, analysis, and complex problem-solving across industries.
The resolution highlights HGTC’s leadership in advancing AI literacy and innovation under the theme “Empowering Innovation with AI.” During AI Week, the College will raise awareness of ethical and practical AI applications, encourage collaboration and experimentation, and recognize innovative ideas that enhance student success and institutional effectiveness.
“Artificial intelligence is not about replacing human potential. It is about expanding it,” said Dr. Marilyn “Murph” Fore, president of HGTC. “AI literacy is becoming essential for tomorrow-ready employees. We are honored that the South Carolina House has recognized AI Week and HGTC’s role in preparing students and employers for the future of work.”
The resolution affirms that key benefits of AI include enhanced productivity, improved customer service, and accelerated learning, making AI proficiency critical for South Carolina’s evolving workforce. Through House Resolution No. 5085, the House encourages citizens of the Palmetto State to learn more about this transformative technology and its impact on education, business, and public service.
The resolution was adopted in Columbia on Feb. 24, 2026, and signed by Speaker G. Murrell Smith, Jr., with an official copy presented to HGTC in recognition of the College’s leadership.
Throughout AI Week, HGTC will host educational sessions, demonstrations, and collaborative initiatives designed to showcase responsible AI use, promote ethical standards, and inspire innovation among students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
As industries across South Carolina continue to evolve, HGTC remains committed to equipping students with forward-thinking skills that align with employer needs and position graduates at the forefront of emerging technologies.
