Approximately 40 Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) Welding students gained firsthand insight into local manufacturing careers during industry tours at Envirosep and SixAxis in Georgetown County on Friday, Oct. 16, as part of Manufacturing Month.

Organized in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) and Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments (WRCOG), the tours provided students from HGTC's Conway and Georgetown campuses with an opportunity to explore modern manufacturing operations, learn about career pathways and connect with local employers.

The students visited Envirosep in Georgetown and SixAxis in Andrews, gaining exposure to manufacturing environments and the technical skills, equipment and processes used in the industry. The experience also highlighted the connection between classroom instruction and the workforce needs of manufacturers throughout the region.

"These experiences are invaluable because they allow our students to see firsthand how the skills they are developing at HGTC translate into rewarding careers right here in our community," said Dr. Melissa Batten, interim president of HGTC. "We are grateful to our industry and workforce partners for opening their doors to our students and helping us strengthen the connection between education and employment. Partnerships like these are essential to preparing a skilled workforce and supporting economic growth throughout our region."

HGTC Welding instructors Jay Owens and Cameron Thompson from the Georgetown Campus and Josh Evans and Jacob Satterfield from the Conway Campus helped coordinate and facilitate the visits.

The tours were held in recognition of Manufacturing Month, a nationwide initiative that highlights the importance of manufacturing to the economy and introduces students to the diverse career opportunities available within the industry. Manufacturing Day, also known as MFG Day, is observed annually on the first Friday in October, with related activities continuing throughout the month.

Through partnerships with SCDEW, WRCOG and regional employers, HGTC continues to expand opportunities for students to engage directly with industry professionals, explore potential career paths and gain a better understanding of the skills employers seek in today's workforce.

The initiative reflects HGTC's ongoing commitment to workforce development, career-connected education and strengthening the pipeline of skilled workers to support the region's growing manufacturing industry.
