HGTC Observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Announces Volunteer Opportunity Honoring Legacy of Service
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King and his enduring commitment to justice, service and equality.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is recognized nationwide as a “day on, not a day off,” encouraging reflection and meaningful community service. In the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy, the College will host a volunteer opportunity on Tuesday, Jan. 20, inviting students and employees to give back through hands-on service.
HGTC will partner with Meals on Wheels of Horry and Georgetown counties to support its mission of serving seniors and community members in need. College volunteers will assist in the kitchen from 7:30 a.m. to noon in Building 1100B on the Conway Campus. Participants may arrive at any time during the volunteer window and help for as long as schedules allow.
College leaders emphasized that service opportunities such as this one reflect Dr. King’s belief that positive change begins with individual action rooted in compassion and responsibility for others.
“Dr. King challenged each of us to consider how our actions, both large and small, can help create a more just and compassionate world,” said HGTC President Dr. Marilyn “Murph” Fore. “This volunteer opportunity with Meals on Wheels reflects the heart of his message and the values we strive to live out as a college community committed to service, dignity and opportunity for all.”
The College encourages members of the campus community to honor Dr. King’s legacy through acts of service, civic engagement or kindness, whether through this volunteer opportunity or other ways of giving back across the community.
