Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) has honored Joe T. "Tommy" Branyon Jr., the longest-serving chair in the College's 60-year history, with the designation of chairman emeritus for his exceptional leadership, dedicated service and lasting contributions to the institution.

The HGTC Area Commission approved the honorary designation during its meeting Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026. Branyon, who served as chair for 15 years, joins former commissioners Ken Richardson and Herman C. Jones in receiving the distinction. He continues to serve as a member of the Area Commission.

"Tommy Branyon has been an extraordinary leader, trusted colleague and dedicated advocate for Horry-Georgetown Technical College," said Robert Hucks, chair of the HGTC Area Commission. "His thoughtful leadership, integrity and genuine commitment to student success have helped guide the College through years of growth and transformation. As we celebrate HGTC's 60th anniversary, it is especially meaningful to recognize someone whose service has made such a lasting difference in the lives of our students and the communities we serve."

Branyon has served on the HGTC Area Commission for more than 35 years, providing leadership through significant periods of institutional growth and change. Throughout his tenure, he has championed initiatives that have expanded access to higher education, strengthened workforce development and supported the College's continued advancement.

His contributions include supporting the expansion of dual enrollment opportunities, the Technical Scholars Program and partnerships with area educational institutions. He also played an important role in the establishment of Horry County Early College High School, which provides students with opportunities to earn college credits while completing their high school education.

Branyon has been reappointed to the Area Commission for 10 terms and has participated in the selection processes for three HGTC presidents. His leadership has also supported major capital improvements across the College's campuses, helping strengthen facilities, academic programs and educational opportunities for students.

Beyond his service to HGTC, Branyon has remained actively involved in his community. He previously served as chair of the Andrews Election Commission and president of the Andrews Rotary Club, where he currently serves as secretary-treasurer. He has also served on the board of trustees at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Known for his thoughtful decision-making, collaborative leadership and commitment to public service, Branyon has been a valued mentor to fellow commissioners and a steadfast supporter of HGTC students, faculty and staff.

As HGTC celebrates its 60th anniversary, Branyon's appointment as chairman emeritus honors a legacy of leadership, service and dedication that continues to shape the College's mission and future.
