The Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) Area Commission approved the development
of a new Cardiovascular Technology degree program and honored the College's longest-serving
chair at its meeting Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026.
The Commission approved a new Associate in Applied Science degree in Cardiovascular Technology, Adult Echocardiography, designed to prepare students for careers in cardiovascular diagnostic imaging. The program is planned for the Spier Building on HGTC's Grand Strand Campus and will expand the College's health sciences offerings to support regional workforce needs.
Pending required approvals, registration for the program is anticipated to begin in fall 2027, with classes expected to start in spring 2028. The program will provide additional educational and career pathways for students interested in the growing health care field.
The Commission also voted to appoint Joe T. "Tommy" Branyon Jr. as chairman emeritus in recognition of his longstanding leadership and service to the College. Branyon served as chair for 15 years, making him the longest-serving chair in HGTC's 60-year history. He continues to serve as a member of the Area Commission.
"Tommy Branyon's leadership and dedication have helped shape HGTC into the institution it is today," said Robert Hucks, chair of the HGTC Area Commission. "His steady guidance, thoughtful leadership and unwavering commitment to our students, employees and communities have left a lasting legacy. It is a privilege to recognize his exceptional service with this well-deserved distinction."
The Commission also received updates on enrollment, financial operations and capital improvements, including the completion of the Automotive Building Expansion project in September 2026.
These actions reflect HGTC's continued commitment to expanding educational opportunities, meeting regional workforce needs and strengthening the College's service to Horry and Georgetown counties.
