Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) proudly announces that Dr. Mara Lencina, Professor of Spanish, has published a scholarly chapter in the newly released volume Mujer, voz y representación en fotografía y materiales visuales en el mundo hispanohablante (Women, Voice and Representation in Photography and Visual Materials in the Spanish-speaking World), 2025.

This highly respected academic publication, part of the Arts and Literature Argus-a series, features twelve essays by scholars from top institutions across the United States. The volume explores underrepresented visual media and the role of women in Hispanic film, photography, and alternative art forms. Dr. Lencina was specially invited to contribute a chapter examining the nuanced representation of women in these mediums.

“I am proud to continue placing Horry-Georgetown Technical College alongside our nation’s top academic institutions,” said Dr. Lencina. “Being included in a volume that brings attention to overlooked artistic expressions in the Hispanic world is both a professional honor and a personal passion.”

In addition to her academic writing, Dr. Lencina is receiving international acclaim for her recent documentary, Letters to the Pope: One Man’s Quest for the Truth, which has garnered awards at film festivals in London, New York, Hollywood, Paris, Florence, and Milan. The film is set to go into distribution this summer. Her previous books, Betrayed at Birth: True Stories of Love, Lust, Greed, and Hope (2022) and Stolen Babies of Spain (2020), both reached #1 on Amazon’s Best Seller list just last month.

“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Lencina’s accomplishments, which continue to elevate the reputation of HGTC across national and international academic and creative communities,” said HGTC President Dr. Marilyn “Murph” Fore. “Her scholarship and storytelling bring a powerful voice to issues that matter and exemplify the excellence of our faculty.”

Dr. Lencina’s work continues to inspire students and colleagues alike, bridging language, culture, and the human experience in transformative ways.
