In observance of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) Dental Hygiene students will participate in a free community screening event on April 12, 2025. This initiative, hosted in partnership with Coastal Cancer Center, Coastal Carolina Otolaryngology, and Myrtle Beach Dental Associates, aims to raise awareness about head and neck cancer and the importance of early detection.
The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and will offer free screenings to the community. Attendees will have access to educational resources and the opportunity to speak with healthcare professionals about oral cancer risks, symptoms, and prevention. HGTC Dental Hygiene students will assist doctors with screenings and promote the HGTC Dental Clinic and Dental Hygiene program, highlighting the college’s commitment to community outreach and public health.
“This is a great opportunity for our students to engage with the community while gaining valuable hands-on experience in their field,” said Michelle Meeker, HGTC Program Director and Chair for Dental Sciences. “Oral cancer awareness and early detection are critical in saving lives, and we are honored to be part of this important initiative.”
Oral Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to educating the public on the risks and symptoms of oral cancer, encouraging regular oral exams, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. By participating in this event, HGTC continues to support efforts to reduce the incidence of oral cancer and improve survival rates through early detection.
