Dr. Michael Roberts, HGTC Writer in Residence & English Professor
Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael Roberts, esteemed English Professor, as the College’s first-ever Writer in Residence. This prestigious role, effective April 1, 2025, marks an exciting new chapter for the college’s literary and academic landscape.
Dr. Roberts, a renowned author and educator with a deep passion for literature, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. As Writer in Residence, he will play a vital role in enriching the academic and cultural environment of the college by engaging with students, faculty, and the broader community. His duties will include assisting with college readings at major events, mentoring students as they work on their submissions for the HGTC student publication Waves, and collaborating on various literary initiatives.
“The appointment of Dr. Roberts as Writer in Residence emphasizes HGTC’s ongoing commitment to fostering a vibrant literary culture within our community,” said Dr. Marilyn “Murph” Fore, President of Horry-Georgetown Technical College. “His expertise and passion for literature will inspire our students, engage faculty, and enrich the broader community. We are thrilled to have Dr. Roberts take on this important role, and I am confident that his contributions will leave a lasting legacy.”
Dr. Roberts shared his enthusiasm for the new position, stating, “I am deeply honored to be named the first Writer in Residence at HGTC. This is a unique opportunity to engage with both the college and the community, and to encourage a love of literature and writing in students. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues, mentoring young writers, and helping elevate HGTC’s literary culture.”
The Writer in Residence position is a volunteer role that highlights Dr. Roberts’ dedication to both academic excellence and community service. His term will run through August 1, 2027, after which he will assist in selecting the next Writer in Residence. This role is an exciting opportunity for Dr. Roberts to further his passion for literature while giving back to the College and the surrounding community.
