Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is proud to announce that one of its own has written a children’s book. HGTC’s Director of Testing Services, Tara Hill-Starks, recently released her children’s book published in November 2020.

Grandma, I’ve Got This! was inspired and written in memory of Hill-Starks’ late grandmother – Mary Matilda Ray – and illustrates what she taught her as a young child. The book shows the love and compassion between a grandparent and grandchild, and life lessons shared from generation to generation. An original photo of Grandma is in the book.

“People consider me a writer, but I just had a story to tell. I am an advocate for education and literacy for children. I want children to understand the importance of good character. Good character builds a purpose driven life to where one can be successful and thrive,” said Tara Hill-Starks, author.

The story features JJ (the name of the author’s son). JJ is a young and energetic boy who learns valuable life lessons taught by his adoring and wise grandmother. JJ puts these lessons into action with his family, friends and others. JJ shares his toys and counts his blessings!

“I want to leave this legacy to my son. Adults and others can benefit from the teachings of Grandma, I Got This! as well. With everything going on in our world, our nation, and communities, this book gives light to how we all should behave and treat each other,” Hill-Starks explained.

The book cover was inspired by a photo the author took of the late Reverend Dr. Dora L. Atlas and her son while visiting. The photo speaks volumes to the wisdom and knowledge an elder can pour into a young soul. The original photo is in the book as well.

“Grandmothers are special people. They raise their grandchildren. They wipe tears, bake cookies, and give their grandchildren anything they want! That’s what my grandmother did,” Hill-Starks continued.

To purchase the book online, visit Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other book retailers. The book is available at the HGTC Barnes and Noble location in paperback for $13.99 and $19.99 for the hardcover version.
