STEM Camps

Horry Telephone Cooperative, Inc. (HTC) is proud to announce a partnership with Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) to fund a summer STEM camp for area youth and scholarships for local public high school seniors.

The HTC STEM Summer Camp was created to expose young students to the world of STEM and the education and career opportunities available to them in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. The donation allowed for over 200 children from the Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand, the Mary C. Canty Life-Long Impacted Teens (MCC LIT), the James R. Frazier Recreation Center in Bucksport, and the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Conway to attend the camp for free. HGTC professors lead the camp in areas of computer coding, coding with robotics, digital photography, virtual reality, YouTube, food science, and social media. HTC plans to offer the HTC STEM Summer Camp again in the summer of 2020.

Kids at STEM Camp“HTC is pleased to partner with Horry-Georgetown Technical College and our local community partners to encourage our youth to explore the world of STEM and provide scholarship opportunities for standout high school seniors,” said HTC CEO Mike Hagg.

For students at the Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand, this year’s camp was eye-opening and rewarding.

“The HTC STEM Summer Camp gave our teens at the Boys & Girls Club of the Grand Strand opportunities to explore the worlds of technology and science in hands-on ways they haven’t experienced,” said Boys & Girls Club of the Grand Strand CEO Dione Buonto. “Our collaboration with HGTC and HTC will inspire our youth as they continue on their educational journeys!”

Ja’Net Wade, recreation youth coordinator at the City of Myrtle Beach, agrees.

“We really enjoyed all of our STEM classes,” she said. “The hands-on, in-class experience has helped us get an in-depth understanding of the subjects and a preview of what college will be like. All of the professors were amazing as we learned so much from them!

Kids at STEM Camp. The HTC Cooperative Spirit Scholarship will fund 13 $1,000 scholarships each year for the next five years for one graduating senior from each public high school in Horry and Georgetown counties.

“This generous commitment from HTC will allow us to expose our talented area youth to the educational and career opportunities available to them through HGTC, and to do so at an early age,” said HGTC president Dr. Marilyn Murphy Fore. “The scholarships will make these opportunities a reality for high school students across Horry and Georgetown counties.”
