(Conway, SC) 08/13/2019

Santee Cooper employees workingHorry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) recently announced the completion of new construction on the Electrical Lineman training yard located on the Conway campus.  The expansion of the yard allows the college to double enrollment in the Electrical Lineman Technician program beginning with the fall semester.  Funding for the project was made possible through a $195,000 Duke Energy Grant received this year in response to an increase in community interest and utility needs expressed by local industry.

“HGTC is very excited about the latest expansion of the Electrical Lineman Technician training yard that will enable us to double enrollment this fall,” said HGTC President, Dr. Marilyn M. Fore.  “We regularly connect with our community leaders to understand the needs of industry and take great pride in being quick responders to meeting those special requests.”

Construction services were provided by HGTC industry partners, Santee Cooper.  Several of the Santee Cooper employees that participated in the latest construction of the yard are HGTC alumni.  The training yard includes 32 poles and hardware for overhead construction training and a new comprehensive underground training facility.

The Electrical Lineman program began in January 2015 following the initial construction of the lineman yard in November 2014.  The program prepares students both mentally and physically to have the knowledge, skills, techniques, and desire to enter a utility and remarkably has a 98% job placement rate.  The program is a one semester course and, with the completion of new construction, will offer six classes per year.
