Casey KingHorry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) Addiction and Recovery Lecture Series Founder, Professor Casey King, was recently honored as the Community Advocate of the Year by Faces and Voices of Recovery-Grand Strand (FAVOR). FAVOR Grand Strand's First Annual Awards Banquet was held at the Maeser Auditorium on the HGTC Grand Strand Campus this month.

The award was in recognition of Mr. King’s work in creating and organizing the annual HGTC Addiction and Recovery Lecture Series which features celebrity and professional speakers from across the country held at HGTC since 2008. When reflecting on the awards presentation at the banquet, the physics professor expressed his heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the support from FAVOR Grand Strand. “I am so pleased to be involved with FAVOR Grand Strand and grateful for all of the support received through the years for the HGTC Addiction and Recovery Lecture Series,” he said. “It’s a privilege to have such a wonderful advocacy group in the Myrtle Beach area.”

FAVOR Grand Strand advocates for recovery through direct outreach to the community, provides recovery support through working with persons with substance use problems, their families and friends, and works with business and community leaders to encourage a recovery friendly environment. Dr. Louis Slover, Board President for FAVOR Grand Strand, said, “Casey King is a dedicated advocate for recovery. It was a great honor for Faces and Voices of Recovery to recognize Professor King for his never tiring efforts to educate and bring awareness of substance abuse disorder to our community. Professor King organizes and hosts the Annual HGTC Lecture Series which has become the premier advocacy and education event in the low country of which FAVOR Grand Strand is proud to be a sponsor.”

The purpose of the HGTC Addiction and Recovery Lecture Series is to increase public awareness of recovery in our community, educate the public on the biology and psychological basis that drives many addictions, demonstrate that addiction crosses all social and economic boundaries, reduce the stigma our culture assigns to those in recovery and to demonstrate that recovery from addictions is possible through a multitude of methods and can be free to those who want it.

The next HGTC Addiction and Recovery Lecture Series will begin in February 2020. A complete schedule of events will be available later this year.
