HGTC Launches New Technical Scholars Programs for Georgetown County

Patient care, computer coding programs available to high school students.

Tech Scholars(CONWAY) May 3, 2018 – Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is rolling out two new Technical Scholars programs for Georgetown County this fall: patient care and medical assistant and computer coding. The Technical Scholars program allows high school juniors and seniors to take college courses that count towards high school and college credit, and in turn allows for a smooth transition to college.

Students who successfully compete the program will be eligible to apply to take competency exams for certification in one of the following areas: certified nursing assistant, clinical medical assistant, phlebotomy, and certified patient care technician/medical assistant. Additionally, the computer coding program is designed to give interested students an opportunity to earn credits towards an Associate in Applied Science in Computer Technology. Because Lottery Tuition covers the majority of the program cost, students’ overall college tuition costs decrease significantly.

Classes for both programs will be held in the fall and spring semesters Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on HGTC’s Georgetown Campus. Students must be able to compete their high school graduation requirements within the parameter of the program.

Early application is encouraged and interested students should contact their high school guidance counselors to begin the application process.

“We are excited to be offering new educational opportunities for high school students in Georgetown County,” said HGTC Associate Dean T’Mars McCallum. “These programs will give students an early exposure to college and help them jump-start their careers.”
