State-of-the-Art Crime Scene Scanning System Now Available at HGTC

Students, local law enforcement to train on three-dimensional laser technology

FARO Scanner(Conway, SC) Dec 13, 2018 - The criminal justice program at Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is the new owner of one of the most state-of-the-art technologies in crime scene investigation: the FARO 3D Crime Scene Scanning System. The FARO system will be used in all HGTC crime scene investigation courses and HGTC will serve as one of two FARO national training sites for law enforcement officials. HGTC is one of the only colleges on the east coast using this technology in the classroom.

The FARO system is a three-dimensional scanning system used to scan, photograph, measure, and reconstruct major crime scenes into a three-dimensional cloud model, saving law enforcement a tremendous amount of time in the field. One local police department already owns the FARO system, and a second is considering purchasing one. HGTC plans to partner with local law enforcement agencies to assist in training on this new technology.

“We’re thrilled to have this technology on campus,” said Professor Scott. “This technology allows us to not only ensure our students are competitive in their skillsets once they graduate, but also ensure that our local law enforcement agencies have access the best training and technology out there.”

HGTC’s Criminal Justice Technology program is an associate degree program with two paths for students to choose from – crime scene investigation and general criminal justice. It is designed for students who want to increase their employment potential, increase their advancement potential, or transfer into a senior institution to continue their education. The program concludes with an intensive capstone course in which students develop education portfolios and participate in a 135-hour internship that allows them to apply what they’ve learned throughout the program and prepares them for their careers.
