HGTC Engineering Students Win Awards

Bridge TeamA team of engineering students from Horry-Georgetown Technical College in South Carolina brought home two awards from the 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers conference held recently in Charleston. The Carolinas Conference hosted by The Citadel included bridge and concrete canoe competitions among three days of student competitions.

HGTC was the only two-year college represented, competing against universities such as Clemson, the University of South Carolina, SC State, The Citadel, NC State, Duke and UNC Charlotte. Dr. Ronald W. Welch, dean of engineering at The Citadel, commended the HGTC team for stepping out to compete against larger, more senior institutions.

Team with CanoeThe HGTC team participated in a number of competitions, including the concrete canoe, concrete Frisbee, steel bridge, Balsa wood bridge, quiz bowl, surveying and geotechnical competitions. HGTC won two awards in the concrete canoe competition for the design paper and the presentation of how the canoe was built.

The team was made up of three second-year students who had competed last year and who had also won two awards, and several first-year students. The first-year students are already excited and preparing for next year’s competition April 9-11, 2015, at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
