Culinary Students Surprise Chef Bride

When Chef Kathleen Hassett, a professor in the Culinary Arts Chef Kathleen Hassettprogram at Horry-Georgetown Technical College, was told to call her new husband, Charlie Steele, to meet her for lunch in the Beach Bistro 354, she didn’t know exactly what her students were cooking up. Turned out that another professor, Chef Eric Wagner, had plotted with students to plan a wedding luncheon honoring the happy couple, with HGTC restaurant patrons--some complete strangers--as honored guests.

Students decorated the Beach Bistro in fine autumn style, complete with a pumpkin carving inscribed with the couple’s initials, a special high-top table set with a bottle of sparkling grape juice for the bride, a wedding cake, music and photos of Chef Hassett on her wedding day. As the happy couple arrived, they beamed. HGTC students, faculty and staff ensured VIP treatment for them and restaurant patrons.

The first course of the special lunch included fruit and cheese, Chef Kathleen Hassettbacon-wrapped shrimp and spinach artichoke dip. The second course included Caprese salad, Chicken Hassett, Tenderloin of Steele, Atlantic Salmon Wellington, Brussel sprouts with pecans and bacon, and other vegetables. Dessert consisted of a marbled wedding cake and chocolate strawberries and truffles.

Chef Hassett and Mr. Steele met on Match.com four years ago. Before marrying, they both lived on the Grand Strand.
