In the spirit of Halloween and the season of giving, Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) has demonstrated its commitment to the local community by collecting non-perishable food items and essential supplies for Backpack Buddies. On Halloween Day, several HGTC employees personally delivered these much-needed donations to help feed children living in poverty in Horry County.

Backpack Buddies has been a lifeline for many underprivileged children in the region, ensuring they have access to nutritious meals despite challenging circumstances.

Dr. Marilyn Murphy Fore, President of HGTC, expressed her gratitude for the heartfelt efforts of the college's employees and students, saying, "I am very proud of the efforts of our employees and students to help children in need right here in our local community. It is hard to imagine the number of underprivileged Horry County children who may go hungry because of a lack of food. I am grateful to those who helped restock the supplies that were completely exhausted."

The collection for Backpack Buddies was initiated as part of the HGTC Human Resources wellness initiative for October. Employees and students were encouraged to contribute to this noble cause.

Barb Mains, Founder and Director of Help 4 Kids/Backpack Buddies, expressed her gratitude, saying, "The HGTC donation could not have been delivered at a better time for the Backpack Buddies program. We supply 2,600 bags to 40 schools for children each week, and, due to supply chain issues and shortages, we have had difficulties getting enough food. I am so thankful for what we received from HGTC employees and students. The donations will help us continue our mission of helping children in need."

HGTC's commitment to the local community and its support for Backpack Buddies reflects the institution's dedication to creating a positive impact beyond the classroom.
