America is changing and workers need to be creative, knowledgeable, multi-skilled problem-solvers. The goal of ASSIST is to deliver education and career-training programs that prepare students to have those characteristics for employment in high-wage, high-skill occupations, especially in the engineering sector. 


The Accessible Support Services and Instruction for Sustainable Transition (ASSIST) program was developed because 40-45% of all job openings through 2014 are projected to be in middle-skilled occupations that require post-secondary training and/or education, but not a bachelor's degree. ASSIST will work with those individuals who are eligible for training under the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, dislocated and displaced veterans, the unemployed, and the underemployed. ASSIST will prepare them for employment in high-wage, high-skill occupations.

ASSIST staff members will work closely with regional business leaders to establish educational opportunities for students, such as internships, assistantships, on-the-job training, and apprenticeship programs. These programs will improve employment opportunities for students participating in the ASSIST program, so they will be ready for full-time employment upon graduation.

An essential part of ASSIST is the Workforce Readiness Center. The Workforce Readiness Center services are available to ASSIST participants as well as to the public and are located in room 310 in the 1100 Building on the Conway campus

“Our focus is on employment-driven education and skills.”

The focus of the center is to support and guide participants to acquire educa­tion and skills that will enhance their chances of employment and quickly prepare them for re-entry into the labor force.

We'll work with students to find out their career interests and goals and help them complete all the steps necessary for their educational path.

Upon program completion, or for those who just need to brush up on their job-finding skills, participants will receive help with their resumes, cover letters, and job searching skills. ASSIST will also help them refine business etiquette and correspondence skills, and prepare them for interviews

Engineering @ HGTC [top]

The Engineering and Industrial Technology Department at HGTC offers a modern curriculum tailored by current industry standards. All courses are taught by seasoned professionals and are focused on the practical, hands-on learning of skills that students will undoubtedly use once in their chosen career fields.

Programs featured include:

  • Civil Engineering Technology: Graduates of the CET program are prepared to seek careers in the planning, design and construction of roads, bridges, canals, dams, water and sewerage plants, and similar projects. Work that civil engineering technicians in the field may be assigned inAssist To Workcludes computer aided drafting of construction or industrial drawings, writing specifications, cost estimating, construction job inspection, surveying, and map preparation.
    CET graduates also have the option to continue their education by transferring to a four-year institution to obtain their bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology.
  • Electronics Engineering Technology: Graduates of the EET program will be prepared to find positions in career fields such as electrical power generation and distribution (think Santee Cooper), telecommunications (Time Warner Cable or Horry Telephone Cooperative), medical equipment technology, and industrial control systems design and development (helping corporations run their plants more efficiently).
    EET graduates also have the option to transfer to a four-year institution to obtain their bachelor's in Engineering Technology.

ASSIST unites 10 South Carolina technical colleges, Clemson University, the Local Work­force Investment Boards, the SC Commission for Minority Affairs, the SC National Guard, SC Adult Education, and local businesses to catalyze economic recovery and growth in South Carolina and foster systemic change within the higher education and the technical college system.

Local Business Partners [top]

Local business partners will play a huge role in the outcome of the ASSIST program. Regional business leaders are to guide program content and curriculum revisions to ensure that students are learning the skills and competencies required by employers. This will be accomplished by surveying these regional businesses to help to determine the exact education, skills, and proficiencies they are looking for in their new employees.

ASSIST staff members will be working closely with regional business leaders to establish educational opportunities for students, such as internships, on-the-job training, assistantships, and apprenticeship programs that will build the students resumes and secure full-time employment upon graduation.
