Although doctors and nurses are often the most visible members of a healthcare team, many other highly qualified professionals are working in today's complex healthcare industry.

HGTC's Health Science Technology department offers an outstanding variety of programs designed to prepare healthcare professionals in fields ranging from Nursing and EMT to Dental Science and Medical Imaging.

Dental Sciences

The Dental Science programs are offered on the Grand Strand campus in a state-of-the-art facility, where classroom instruction is combined with clinical activities to prepare graduates for employment.

EMT (Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic)

This program prepares students for practice as paramedics, with opportunities for students entering the field of emergency care and for advancement for those working in the field. Classes are offered on the Grand Strand campus.

Upon successful completion of the first two semesters of the Paramedic program, students may be eligible for the EMT-Basic Certificate. Students should contact their Advisor for information.

Medical Coding and Billing

This certificate program, offered on the Grand Strand campus, prepares students for employment in the business and technology side of healthcare. Medical coding and billing is the process of translating medical documentation into standardized codes for the purpose of national statistical reporting and reimbursement of services. It also involves the collection, verification of integrity, compliance, and storage of information related to healthcare services. Graduates work in all areas related to the healthcare industry, including hospitals, doctors' offices, long-term care, billing/coding agencies, ancillary service organizations, regulatory agencies, and insurance companies. This profession covers a broad spectrum of administrative employment with limited patient contact. Upon completion of this program, graduates are eligible for a national certification examination.

Medical Imaging Technology

Medical Imaging Technology includes a variety of methods for performing examinations of the body, for purposes such as ruling out or confirming and identifying fractures or disease. Graduates are eligible for program-specific registries.

HGTC's Nursing Program works closely with regional facilities to prepare both practical and registered nurses for employment through classroom instruction and clinical activities in local hospitals, long-term care facilities, physicians' offices, and more. The Associate's degree and diploma programs are available on the Conway and Georgetown campuses. HGTC's Nursing programs are fully accredited. Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy Technician program, offered at the Grand Strand campus, teaches students proper pharmacy operations supervised by registered pharmacists.

Phlebotomists are responsible for collecting blood for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists also assist in collection, transportation, and basic specimen-handling procedures for many types of specimens, such as venous blood, urine, sputum, and other body tissues. This program is offered on the Grand Strand campus.

Physical Therapist Assistant

Physical Therapist Assistants are skilled health-care workers who carry out patient treatment programs supervised by a physical therapist. The assistant works to relieve pain and/or increase function in patients via therapeutic application of heat, cold, light, water, electricity, sound, massage, exercise, gait, and functional activity. Clinical experience is provided in a variety of settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation agencies, schools, private offices, and long-term care facilities. This program is offered at the Grand Strand campus. Graduates are eligible for licensure exams.

Surgical Technician

Surgical Technologists, important members of the operating-room team, work in cooperation with surgeons and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe, direct patient care during all phases of surgery. Technologists prepare and sterilize instruments and surgical supplies, assist physicians during surgical procedures, ensure necessary equipment is properly maintained and available when needed, handle surgical specimens, maintain a sterile atmosphere in the operating-room environment, and complete necessary paperwork related to surgical procedures. This program is offered at the Grand Strand and Georgetown campuses.
