Student Success Stories
“Can I get you another cup of coffee?” For most recent college graduates, this sounds like yet another dead-end job. For Leigha Powell, however, this simple question fills her with pride - she is the owner of Rivertown Java in downtown Conway, a business she started shortly after graduating from Horry Georgetown Technical College with a degree in general business.
“During my classes at HGTC, we had to create a business plan and I used this shop as my project. My professors taught us about finances, taxes, marketing, and management, so when I graduated, I already had most of the plans in place.”
As the single mother of an active 6-year-old, Powell needed flexibility in her academic program. Through a combination of online and on-campus classes, she was able to accomplish her career goals while caring for her son. “Opening a new business can be scary, but my professors really prepared me to be a successful business owner, and now they're some of my best customers!”
“I had been in the service industry long enough to know that I wanted to follow a different career path. I enrolled at Horry Georgetown Technical College because it offered the best future in Engineering Technology. My professors were first-rate and they taught me the technical skills I needed, plus they helped me land a great job! Best of all, HGTC courses transfer, so everything I've learned counts toward my Bachelor's degree in Engineering.”
