Jason Maddey

Former Myrtle Beach resident Dr. Jason Madey, graduated from high school in the 1990s and pursued his dream to play hockey

Jason Madey got married and started a family soon after graduating from high school. He started playing professional hockey and coaching, taking odd jobs on the side to make ends meet. Higher education wasn’t a priority at first.

But as he settled into family life, he began seeing the importance of obtaining a college degree. With his young family to support, affordability and academic flexibility were important. It quickly became apparent that Horry-Georgetown Technical College would be a good fit for his needs.

Madey enrolled and excelled in science and math. After obtaining his degree, he transferred to Coastal Carolina University and went on to graduate from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Today, the 36-year-old former Myrtle Beach resident is a medical doctor, a major in the U.S. Army, and chief of the Department of Neurology at the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Virginia. “Many things have happened since my time at Horry-Georgetown Technical College,” Dr. Madey said. “But I must say that in making a career like this, it is all about the solid foundation, and HGTC provides that foundation.”

“I work with people who graduated from Harvard, Yale, Notre Dame and other big programs and honestly they often come to me and ask, ‘Where did you go to school? How do you know all this?’” said Dr. Madey, the neurologist. “I tell them my path, and they are just blown away.

“It just goes to show that when you find a program that is willing to assist you, to mentor you, and build a solid foundation on it, you can be successful in any career you choose.”

He’s also an example of the opportunities that lay ahead for students of the college, from well-paying skilled jobs as diverse as welders, hospitality and culinary workers to nurses, dental technicians and medical doctors.
